When Queen Victoria took the throne of England in , it was considered the beginning of a new era, a new beginning, moving away from the wild, wastrel ways of her immediate predecessors, especially the debauched King George IV. However, the queen consort Adelaide was not to be lumped in with them.
Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, wife of William III, was willing to accept William&#;s proposal in the royal marriage frenzy following the death of Princess Charlotte in (William was promised debt relief and an increased income if he married.) Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen was born on 13 August at Meiningen, in Thuringia, she was the daughter of George I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and his wife Luise Eleonore of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, daughter of Prince Christian of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. She was christened with the names Adelaide Amelia Louise Theresa Caroline.
