Biography
Dr. Basma Abdelgafar is an Associate Professor of Public Policy. She consults and provides training internationally on policy, governance and Muslim affairs. Dr. Abdelgafar has worked in the Canadian federal government, academia and the third sector. She has contributed to the development of graduate studies in public policy at the American University in Cairo, Qatar Foundation and the International Peace College of South Africa. She was founding head of the Public Policy in Islam Masters Program at the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies, Hamad Bin Khalifa University. She has a keen interest in research and teaching in public policy and governance in Islam as well as in Muslim history, thought, institutions and communities. Her Ph.D. in Public Policy from Carleton University, Ottawa, focused on intellectual property, pharmaceuticals and the international trade regime. Her book publications include: Public Policy Beyond Traditional Jurisprudence, Thriving in a Plural World, M.A. Draz’s Morality in the Quran and the Greater Good of Humanity, and The Illusive Tradeoff. Biography
Basma Al Sulaiman is the founder of BASMOCA, the Basma Al Sulaiman Museum of Contemporary Art. She was born and raised in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where she is considered a patron of the arts. She holds a BA in English Literature.
Basma discovered contemporary art through one of her other passions: travelling. It was in New York () that she acquired her first piece, a work by the celebrated David Hockney. Soon after, she began to collect in earnest, purchasing works by Frank Stella, David Mack, Renier Fetting, and Luciano Castelli, which she brought home to her native Saudi.
She decided to further her knowledge in the field of art, and in , completed a diploma in Modern and Contemporary Art from Christie’s Education, London.
Basma later became interested in Chinese contemporary art. She travelled all over China, visiting artists’ studios and galleries, and acquired pieces by Yue Minjun, Zhang Xiaogang, Zeng Fanzhi, and Zhang Huan. She continued building her international collection, whilst also focusing on Saudi artworks.

Basma was born in Cairo. Her father worked as a journalist while her mother (was a women’s rights advocate). Basma’s acting career began in college where she acted in the movieRead more “Al Madina” directed by Yousry Nasr Allah. Prior to performing in “Al Madina”, Basma had tried to enter the world of acting through applying for the state radio and television service. She applied for the position and took the required examinations. However, she was selected by Yousry for the leading role in “Al Madina” before she had completed the application process. Following her graduation from the English division of the Faculty of Literature at Cairo University, Basma worked as an announcer for the Nile Variety channel between and Towards the end of that period she was contacted by the office of the director Sherif Arafah who had seen her in “Al Madina”.
