A Changemaker Project is a popular way for students to learn about different people from throughout history and all over the globe and research how they have positively impacted the world today.

In this activity, students will create a biography poster of someone past or present that was a positive agent of change. Students should be sure to include facts about their life, education, work, and more. As they research, they can use biography worksheets to keep track of information. Teachers may allow students to choose someone on their own, or provide a list for students to choose from. Our picture encyclopedia of biographies can be a great place to start! Students can find figures who have impacted history, literature, politics, science, and more! This example focuses on the life of Sacagawea, and can be used as a guide to show students what is possible. Their poster could be on any important Changemaker from history!

Not only is creating a poster fun, it's also a helpful way for students to highlight the most important aspects of a historical figure alongside visuals. Biography posters can be used as final assessments or to supplement a further research and presentation project. This project does require students to do additional research, but is easy to fit into any history unit!

Using one of the templates or starting from scratch on the poster layout, students will build up a profile of their chosen figure. Depending on requirements or complexity, students can add timelines to their posters. However, the wide variety of characters, scenes, and items makes it very easy for students to customize their project to fit any guidelines.

After listening to the brief descriptions of African American changemakers throughout history in the award winning books 28 Days and The Undefeated, students will choose one African American changemaker to research and then create a biography poster of important facts and visual attributes to represent that person.

These posters can be printed out, laminated and hung around the room as a powerful reminder of these notable people and their accomplishments.

Students can also present their posters to their classmates, sharing their knowledge about their person.

The posters could also be combined into a book or “dictionary” and that students could read to younger grades for a school-wide, community building activity!
