Elnur Mammadli (AZE) was one of those children who started judo around the age of seven and who quickly built a dream, one day to become Olympic champion. For Elnur this dream became reality in in Beijing when he won the supreme title in the kg category. As the preparations for the next World Championships in Baku, September , are in full swing, we met the one who is today the Vice President of the Judo Federation of Azerbaijan and whose eyes continue to shine with happiness as he climbs on the tatami.
Born on 29 June in Baku, on the shores of the Caspian Sea, his mother pushed Elnur to do judo. She was then admiring another great champion, Nazim Huseynov (Read the story: ) who a few years earlier had become the first Olympic judo champion in Azerbaijan's history: "Before it became my own dream, to become a great champion, it was my mom's dream. She had seen Nazim on TV and thought judo was for me. Quickly, when I started practicing, I actually felt that something was happening. I obviously had predispositions and it did not take me long to begin to imagine that I too could get on the top of the podium" said Mammadli.

MAMMADLI ON THE EJU TOUR
Often we see athletes retire from competitive judo and transition in to coaching positions, or take up roles within their federations. One of those former athletes is Elnur MAMMADLI.
Mammadli is a well-known member of our judo community, in the first decade of this millennia he accomplished what many can only dream of, an Olympic title. Not only this but he managed to span both the kg and kg categories, claiming European and World Masters titles. Now Mammadli is Vice President of the Azerbaijan Judo Federation and highly celebrated among his peers, but he doesn&#;t only hold this position for status. The Olympic champion is an idol and motivation for even the youngest international competitors, joining the cadet and junior athletes at European and World events, as well as the seniors. During the Cadet European Championships in Porec, Croatia, he was also invited to attend the Adapted Judo class for Olympic Day, stating,
I am very happy to share my experiences with these kids. I am thankful that this was organised and grateful to be invited to share in this.

The focus might be on the upcoming Olympic Games and the possible champions of , but what of those who have come before? Team Azerbaijan are coming to Paris with a strong set up, one being Hidayat HEYDAROV in the kg category. In this past cycle, he has been coached and supported by one of Azerbaijan&#;s most decorated judoka; Elnur MAMMADLI, who claimed the Olympic title in Beijing in the same category.
Winning in the Olympic Games holds its own beauty, and observing the Games from the stands carries a different beauty. Watching Azerbaijani judoka in the Olympic Games adds an extra layer of responsibility. When you&#;re on the mat, you feel a singular responsibility, but the weight of responsibility intensifies when you&#;re watching the athletes of the national team compete.
The biggest dream of every athlete is to become an Olympic Champion, and I became one of these athletes. I experienced very challenging yet honorable paths to reach the pinnacle of this Olympic event. The Korean athlete was someone I greatly respected.
