This handsomely illustrated volume features a comprehensive listing of outstanding type designers from around the world, ranging from Johann Gutenberg (c. &#x;) to the present day. Arranged alphabetically by designer, the book features the work of more than figures in type design, many of whom are among the field&#x;s most renowned&#x;including Morris Fuller Benton, Matthew Carter, Adrian Frutiger, Claude Garamond, Eric Gill, Frederic W. Goudy, Bruce Rogers, and Hermann Zapf&#x;as well as entries on lesser-known designers whose contributions to typography are substantial. Entries are illustrated by examples of the designers&#x; work taken from posters, private press editions, magazine covers, book designs, and rare archival specimens.

Erik van Blokland
Erik van Blokland (born ) could not choose between type design and programming and decided to do both. His work includes randomfont Beowolf 1 (, MoMA collection ), typewriter Trixie (), banknote LTR Federal (, TDC ) and Eames Century Modern (, TDC, Letter.2, ).
For many years he has focused on the technical aspects of type design and developed, among other things, the acclaimed type interpolation tools Skateboard, MutatorMath and Superpolator. Erik co-authored the Unified Font Object (UFO) specification and the W3C Web Open Font Format standard 2. He is also co-organizer of the triannual Robothon Type & Technology conference 3.
Van Blokland is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK). He is currently the head of the Type and Media master department. He invented the TypeCooker sketching tool which challenges students to meet ridiculous requirements.
Van Blokland consults on type design tools, logos, lettering and typefaces, with clients including HBO, The Government of The Netherlands, Adidas, and Adobe. He can talk endlessly about ancient digital font formats and currently dabbles in research projects on optics, digitisation, drawing a

At an annual event we’ve dubbed Typekitpalooza, all 46 of us gather in San Francisco for a few days together as a group, scheduling sessions to hear each other talk on specific topics relevant to the work we do together. We’re generally an ambitious group, hungry to tap the full potential of our team and of our colleagues across different parts of the tech and type industries.
Along these lines, we’ve started a tradition of inviting “celebrity guest speakers” to join us for some ‘Palooza time — people we look up to and admire, but also people who we consider to be members of our extended professional network and who thus have some measure of stake in what we do. This year, we were delighted to hear from Erik van Blokland, Indra Kupferschmid, and Nina Stössinger. We’d like to take a moment to share a little from their talks, because we found them enormously fun and inspiring.

Rompendo também com tipologias e tradições, a dupla holandesa Just van Rossum e Erik van Blokland desenvolveu, nos finais dos anos 80, uma inovadora fonte tipográfica. Depois de estudarem Design gráfico e tipográfico na Academia Real de Belas-Artes e Artes Aplicadas de Haia, fundaram a LettError, uma editora tipográfica conhecida pelo seu trabalho experimental na criação de novas fontes tipográficas, as chamadas Random Fonts ou seja, fontes aleatórias.
Após simples experiências com um quadrado, a dupla aplicou esta ideia a um tipo de letra, criando em a primeira RandomFont: a Beowolf.
Pouco antes de ser impresso, cada ponto de um dado caractére move-se aleatoriamente num espaço previamente definido pelo contorno, conferindo à letra um aspeto dinâmico &#; como se tivesse sido abanada.
