The Complicated Legacy of Ferdinand Piech
Ferdinand Piech is gone. The phrase "larger than life" is frequently used to describe the lives of remarkable individuals, and the term is over-worn. But it's highly applicable in the case of this hugely successful, exceptionally gifted man. He was a man whose strong will permitted him to achieve the near-impossible; a man whose sense of exceptionalism led him to violate rules of society and business with equal impunity. "My way, or get out of my life," was Piech's attitude. And it worked.

I first met Ferdinand when he was chief engineer of Audi, while I was with Ford of Europe. He had just led the creation of the Audi Quattro, the world's first high-performance all-wheel drive coupe. It became an instant sensation. It was at the Frankfurt auto show; I approached him at the Audi stand where he was pointing out the finer aspects of his creation on a full-size cutaway.

According to Bild and Handelsblatt, Piech and his wife were dining at a restaurant in Bavaria when he collapsed. He was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Piech is survived by his 12 children, whom he had with four different women.
Born on April 17, in Vienna, Piech's father Anton was a lawyer. His mother, Louise, was the daughter of Ferdinand Porsche, founder of the sports car maker and designer of the original Volkswagen Beetle.

After obtaining his engineering degree from the University of Zurich, Piech joined Porsche in There he ordered the wet-sump flat-six engine being developed for the yet-to-released — later rechristened the — to be redesigned as a dry-sump motor so it could be used for racing.
In his autobiography Piech stated:
“First and foremost I always saw myself as a product person, and relied on gut instinct for market demand. Business and politics never distracted me from the core of our mission: to develop and make attractive cars."
