The Toughest Fucking Man in Surfing Kala Alexander
It was ass-whipping of the winter. The Scene: ten feet of pure, ball-wrenching Pipe. Out there, exactly 80 surfers climbed over one another for sets while, shoulder-to-shoulder, photographers stood behind tripods burning a kings ransom of Fuji Velvia. Braden Dias was there occupying his usual spot at the top of the food chain. Business as usual. Then some poor, mad fool really blew it. There are some people you absolutely do not drop in on, or even paddle for the same wave as, at Pipeline and Braden is one of those people. This ding-dong, a Brazilian, didnt do his homework. On an eight-foot beast, the dude stuffed the shit out of Braden, taking off as Braden negotiated a thick barrel. A frenzy erupted at the beachfront Volcom house. The infamous whistle began blowing, indicating a major foul in the lineup. Kala and some other guys bolted from the Volcom house and dragged the guy out of the shorebreak. The mans eyes were popping out of his head. He begged for mercy. Not today, dude. Kala, whod been watching some professional wrestling on pay TV, picked the guy up and slammed him to the sand twice.

Do you see a selling point compared to the dozens of other identical shapes on the market?
News shared by Chas today that Kelly Slater has released a new board under his Slater Design label. This time collaborating with shaper Mark Woo. A performance twin.

The hook?
This one mimics the outline of a Great White shark. Kelly Slater’s not the first to turn to nature for surfboard design. Greenough’s original revolutionary fin templates were of course copied from the dorsal of a tuna fish. While the Meyerhoffer was modeled off a merman’s dick.*
I find the performance twin-fish genre to be a lazy reach. Forgiving rails, wide point forward and carried through the middle. Refined, pulled in tail to allow responsiveness and tighter arcs in turns. Business at the front and party at the back, as they say. It’s about as ground-breaking as a Toyota saloon.
Every major shaping label offers its own iteration. You could argue Lost built its empire around it.
Lazy reach, maybe.
But, as with a Toyota, fuck it if they don’t work.

Kala Alexander and Makuakai Rothman are both incredible surfers. Kala, of course, is the man who started the Wolfpak, while Makuakai is the son of Eddie, who started Da Hui. If youve traveled to Hawaii or surfed for more than a day, youve heard tales of both groups, most of which are probably not quite as bad as theyre made out to be although they might be. While one would never want to collide with anyone, anywhere, smashing into either Kala or Makua would definitely be something to avoid a little more than say, smashing into Glenn Hall.
Makua is a world champion big wave surfer. Kala, a sensational big wave guy in his own right. And when shit gets really hairy at Waimea Bay, there are bound to be collisions. This one, however, is brutal. Weve all crossed paths (literally) with another surfer at some point. But who can say theyve crossed paths on a wave as big as this?

Living truth.
The trans in sport issue has burst back, front and center and right in time for the holiday season. A dinner table conversation sure to please. Days ago, a transgendered swimmer broke a school record in New Jersey. Megan Cortez-Fields beat all-comers to win the women’s yard butterfly after racing on the men’s team last year.
Inspiring, certainly, though not to tennis great Martina Navratilova who took to the application formerly known as Twitter to declare, “Women’s sports is not the place for mediocre male athletes who compete as women. Period.”
Ouch.
Thankfully, our World Surf League finds itself on the correct side of history. Professional surfing at its highest level has one of the more inclusive policies. As Derek Rielly reported almost a year ago, “The WSL has opened the door to trans-women competing so long as they’ve been a gal for at least twelve months and their hormone levels are real low ie less than 5 nanomoles per liter continuously for the previous 12 months (biological men hover between 10 and 3
