Scope and Contents
The materials in this collection were donated after Collection 97 was processed, so they are placed in a supplemental collection. The contents are very similar to what is in Coll. 97 so the arrangement is comparable. Collection includes many items related to the book Acadia Parish: A History to by Fontenot and Paul Freeland.

Mary Alice Fontenot Riehl was a journalist and author. Her newspaper career has included staff positions at the Rayne Acadian Tribune, the Crowley Post-Signal, the Lafayette Daily Advertiser, and the Opelousas Daily World. She also wrote feature stories for secular and church papers in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and other south Louisiana communities. Many of her newspaper features dealt with the social life and customs, folklore, and history of Cajuns. As an author, Mrs. Riehl is best known for her series of children's books on Clovis Crawfish. It’s hard to believe that today marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Mary Alice Fontenot, the newspaperwoman, teacher and storyteller who knew and was known by practically everyone in Acadiana.
I said at the time of her death that if you made a stack of everything Mary Alice wrote, you’d have to make another stack of books for her to stand on to see over the first stack.
That’s because she was one of our most prolific writers, but also because she was a tiny little person, barely reaching past my elbow. But she was a giant when it came to her love for south Louisiana, its culture, and its people.
Everyone knows her marvelous creation, Clovis Crawfish, but she was a woman of many and wide interests. Who else could have written entertaining biographies of St. Landry Parish Sheriff D. J. “Cat” Doucet, who some folks regard as a scoundrel, and also (with Kathleen Toups) of saintly Bishop Jules B. Jeanmard?
As a working journalist for many years, she knew everybody and had a story to tell about practically everyone she knew; it was always an interesting story and told only as she could tell it. That storytelling skill was the thing that
