Chapter 23 Summary
Cassia wakes to terrifying shrieking the next morning. She runs to Bram and her parents’ rooms, but they’re all empty. Her mother comes from the kitchen to comfort her and tell her that the Officials are cutting down all the maple trees on their street. They go outside and join their neighbors watching the trees be cut down in their sleepclothes. Cassia’s mother tells her that the leaves make a mess in the fall and they don’t grow uniformly. She appears visibly angry. She says that it’s a warning for her, but Cassia privately feels that it’s for herself.
Before being awoken by the shrieking of the tree saws, Cassia had been dreaming of Ky being taken away in handcuffs by Officials, looking unafraid, even though Cassia knew that he was. The red sun looked like blood on his face.
Later that day, Cassia and Ky are once again marking obstacles on the Hill. They briefly discuss how Officials contacted them both the previous day about their feelings for one another. Ky produces a piece of paper with part of a new forbidden poem on it as a late birthday present for Cassia. Cassia is so emotional that she needs him to read it to her. After he does, they embrace o

As a citizen of the Society, Cassia has always trusted the government&#;s choices for her life. They determine when, what and how much she will eat. They monitor her sleep, work and exercise. They even determine the man she will marry. On the night of her 17th birthday, she nervously boards the air train with her parents. It will take them to her Match Banquet where she will be paired with the perfect mate for her. He may come from any of the Society&#;s cities, and her first introduction to him will be via a television screen in the banquet hall. After that, she will receive a microcard containing pertinent information regarding her future husband. Her best friend, Xander, assures her that everything will work out for the best.
After a dinner Cassia barely eats, the ceremony begins. When her name is called, she stands and watches the large screen. But it remains blank. A voice tells her that her match is actually in the room. To her relief, and happiness, the Society has picked Xander as her mate. It is rare that one&#;s mate is found in the same city and neighborhood, but Cassia is thrilled.

Chapter 15 Summary
Cassia observes the freshness of the new day as she heads to the air-train in the morning. While hiking, she sees that Ky feels a similar invigoration. Before they begin their trek up the hill, he wordlessly and discreetly places what Cassia thinks is her compact back into her hand. They then head into the woods, where Cassia realizes that he in fact did not return her compact, but a similar artifact. Although she doesn’t know what it is, her description of its N, E, S, W letters and spinning needle tell the reader that it’s a compass. Cassia wonders why Ky would give her such a thing.
A boy comes to the top of the hill where Ky and Cassia have already climbed to inform the Official that Lon is injured. The Official gives Cassia his datapod and tells her to take attendance as people reach the hilltop before heading into the woods with the messenger. When they are alone, Ky begins writing in the grass using his hands, a skill that Cassia has never seen anyone have, as writing is illegal—she herself cannot write at all, only type on screens.
