I had been thinking of the God-given alphabet of the Azkanazian* nation and of the land of Armenia - when, in what time, and through what kind of man that new divine gift had been bestowed, as well as the luminous learning and angelic, virtuous piety of the person, so as to cause memorials to blossom in an individual volume. And while I was striving to remember [the facts], there came the command of an excellent man named Hovsep,** a disciple of that person, as well as the encouragement of others, our fellows of student days. Therefdre, I, who had had the fortune of being [his] special pupil, even though the youngest [among his pupils], and the task beyond my capacities, [nevertheless] hastened to write without delay that which was suggested, compelled by the clear mandate which had been addressed to me. And we ask them all that they assist us in our tasks by their prayers, and to commit us to the divine grace, so that we may sail suecessfully and unerringly over the boundless waves of the sea of doctrine.

The Life of Mashtots
The Armenian saint, Mesrop Mashtots, is perhaps one of the most esteemed churchman in Armenian history. As an early church intellectual and inventor of the Armenian alphabet he continues to hold a place of certain distinction in the annals of Armenian history. This is his biography, as assembled and composed by his disciple Koriun, who would later go on to led the Georgian church as its Catholicos. This work of hagiography is perhaps one of the most important Armenian church documents to survive from great antiquity.

Mashtotsʿ, Mesrop
MASHTOTSʿ, MESROP (c. &#x;), inventor of the Armenian alphabet and saint of the Armenian church. The major source for his biography is the Life of Mashtotsʿ written by his pupil and associate, Koriwn. The name Mesrop, the etymology of which is still unknown, does not appear in the works of Armenian writers until after the fifth century.
Mashtotsʿ was born to a peasant named Vardan in the village of Hatsʿekatsʿ, in the district of Tarōn (present-day Muş, Turkey). He was educated in Greek letters as a youth. As a young man he entered military service, becoming a clerk in the royal army stationed at Vagarshapat (present-day Echmiadzin). Led to solitary life by his interest in the scriptures, Mashtotsʿ became an anchorite. He evidently headed a kellion (a small group of anchorites) in the s. While proselytizing the people of the district of Goghtʿn (Nakhichevan, Azerbaijan), he conceived the idea of inventing an alphabet for the Armenian language and making the scriptures available to the common people. The Life of Mashtots is a hagiography of Saint Mesrop Mashtots, who, with Catholicos Sahak and King Vramshapuh, created the Armenian, Georgian and Aghuanian alphabets to advance the Church’s ministry in these kingdoms. With the assistance of Greek and Syriac clerics who helped design and refine the letters, they laid the foundation for schools, Scripture translations and enduring historical legacies. Written by Mashtots’ youngest disciple, Koriun, it is among the first works composed in the Armenian language and script.
