Sarah Miriam Peale
Sarah Miriam Peale is considered the first American professional woman artist. She is the youngest daughter of James Peale (American painter of miniatures and still life paintings) and Miriam Claypoole. Her childhood was spent in Philadelphia along with her parents and three sisters. In addition to her father, Sarah belonged to a very prestigious family of artists including Rembrandt Peale, cousin, Charles Wilson Peale, uncle, and Anna Claypoole Peale, sister.
Her father and uncle, Charles, trained her as an artist. Sarah worked in her father’s studio and learned how to mix paints, prepare canvases and delineate backgrounds. She also gained experience by doing the finishing touches to her father’s paintings. Exhibiting extraordinary talent from an early age, Sarah was admitted as the first women student to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, PAFA, where she became proficient at painting both still lifes and portraits.
Sarah Miriam Peale is well known for painting portraits of political leaders of her era including Senator Hart Benson and the Marquis de Lafayette. She painted for decades and was able to earn her living from her work.

Sarah Miriam Peale was among the earliest, fully professional, self-supporting women artists in the United States. The youngest of five daughters of James Peale () and his wife, Mary Claypoole Peale (), three of whom were active as artists, she was as ambitious and dedicated to art as her successful elder sister, miniature painter Anna Claypoole Peale (). In , she first exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, an institution her uncle, noted artist Charles Willson Peale (), had been instrumental in founding in By , S. Peale’s long, productive, and successful career unfolded in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and St. Louis.

Sarah Miriam Peale (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 19, – February 4, , Philadelphia) was an American portrait painter, one of the notable family of artists descended from the miniaturist and still-life painter James Peale, who was her father. She is noted as a portrait painter, mainly of politicians and military figures. Lafayette sat for her four times.
Life
Sarah was James Peale's youngest daughter and was trained by her father, and uncle Charles Willson Peale. She served as a studio assistant to her father. Her first public works date from with subjects such as flowers and still-life but soon turned to portraiture, In , she spent three months with Rembrandt Peale, her cousin, in Baltimore, and again in and He influenced her painting style and subject matter. For 25 years, she painted in Baltimore (–47) and, intermittently, in Washington, D.C.[1]
She was accepted to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in [2] along with her sister Anna Claypoole Peale,[3] the first women to achieve this distinction.
