Who was Skanderbeg?

Skanderbeg (c. –) was an Albanian nobleman, military commander, and leader of the Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire. He is remembered as a symbol of Albanian national identity and Christian resistance in Europe.

Early Life and Origins

Gjergj Kastrioti, later celebrated as Skanderbeg, was born around to the Kastrioti family, a noble household with influence in the regions of modern-day Albania. His father, Gjon Kastrioti, controlled lands between Lezhë and Prizren, including Mat and Dibër. Gjergj&#;s mother, Voisava, is believed to have been of noble descent, though her exact origins remain disputed—some sources claim she was from the Serbian Branković family, while others suggest an Albanian Muzaka lineage.

As part of the Ottoman practice of maintaining control over vassal states, Gjergj was sent as a hostage to the Ottoman court during his youth. There, he was enrolled in the Enderun School, a prestigious institution that trained elite military and administrative officers. While in Ottoman custody, Gjergj converted to Islam and was given the name İskender Bey (Skanderbeg), meaning &#;Lord Alexander,&#; likely comparing him to Alexander the G

Scanderbeg

This is the first biography of the Albanian national hero Scanderbeg () published in England for more than four hundred years. The son of a prince of Albania, he was educated in the Muslim faith as a hostage at the court of Sultan Murad II and given the title "bey and an army command. In Scanderbeg escaped to his homeland, abjured Islam, and formed a league of princes among the Albanian chieftains. He proclaimed himself Prince of Albania. To resist the Ottomans under Sultan Muhammad II, Scanderbeg received aid at various times from Venice, Naples, Hungary, and the pope. Written by the late Harry Hodgkinson, a former naval intelligence officer who served under Ian Fleming, this engrossing and elegantly crafted book is an attempt to bring the reader closer to this famous historical figure and to set him in the dramatic context of Albania and its history.

Gjergj Kastrioti-Skanderbeg

Hailed as a national hero in Albania, Gjergj Kastrioti-Skanderbeg () successfully ousted the Ottoman Turks from his native land for over two decades, halting Turkey's efforts to spread Islam through a predominately Roman Catholic western Europe.

Kidnapped by the Ottoman Turks at a young age, Albanian freedom fighter Gjergj Kastrioti-Skanderbeg was raised under Islam and trained as a general within the ranks of the Turkish military before fleeing his captors and reconverting to Christianity in As commander of Albania's warlords, he sparked a national revolt in and held off numerous efforts by the Ottomans to take back Albania and bring that country once again under Muslim rule. Following Kastrioti-Skanderbeg's death in his Albanian forces could no longer repulse the Turks; twelve years later Albania fell once more to Turkish forces and remained part of the Ottoman Empire for many centuries, until its eventual liberation in

Drugi izvori takođe govore o srpskom poreklu Pavlovog oca. Neki pominju i grčko.
