I have a background in retail, beginning my career at George Court & Sons. In I started my own business, The Warehouse; it was a private company until late when it floated on the New Zealand Stock Exchange. I held the position of Managing Director until January , then appointed a CEO and assumed the position of Founder, returning as Group CEO from May until October
My first venture into philanthropy began in when I founded the Alay Buhay Foundation in Manila, Philippines. Having seen the extreme poverty there on my many business trips, I wanted to provide a hand up to help local families.
In , my wife Margaret and I established The Tindall Foundation. We were, and still are, passionate about helping New Zealanders to live healthy and happy lives and for our communities to be strong and prosperous. We began by supporting families and social services, and then extended our giving to include environmental initiatives and those that create employment and encourage enterprise, strengthen the community sector and promote generosity and giving.

Sir Stephen Tindall is a co-Founder and Trustee of The Tindall Foundation. Along with his wife Margaret, he established the Foundation to improve the performance of families, community, and the environment. This includes supporting community-based initiatives that create employment and encourage enterprise; supporting the environment and preserving biodiversity; and promote generosity and giving on a hand-up not hand-out basis. The Foundation has donated over $m after paying $m in tax.
Furthermore, he has invested over $m in seed and venture capital through K1W1 Ltd and other vehicles into over start-up and early-stage businesses ranging from biotech, environmental technology, green energy, electronics, high tech and software and other high export potential businesses.
Stephen also co-founded the NZ Business Council for Sustainable Development and was a Councillor on the World Business Council for Sustainable Business Council for several years.

Sir Stephens vision for creating an organisation to provide support for worthwhile initiatives benefiting New Zealand and New Zealanders resulted in the establishment of The Tindall Foundation. This has grown to become Australasias single largest philanthropic trust and it has provided enormous behind the scenes support for many community groups and not-for-profit agencies. Its work in promoting a hand up rather than a hand out philosophy in environmental education and biodiversity, community and social support, in encouraging enterprise and innovation and in support for volunteers has been influential nationwide.
Strong personal leadership from Sir Stephen and the Foundation resulted in the Zero Waste philosophy being adopted by 70% of New Zealands local bodies and changed the way waste and recycling are dealt with.
