Surratt, Jr., two years after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, characterized John Wilkes Booth as "[o]ne whose name and reputation will go down to the latest times in this country associated with the most atrocious assassination ever committed." A mite extreme, to be sure, but Bradley can be excused. He was trying to keep John Surratt from suffering the same fate as his mother (a convicted Booth co-conspirator), death by hanging.
