Mothers in Jazz: Andrea Motis

Mothers In Jazz” is a series, started by vocalist Nicky Schrire. The initiative aims to create an online resource for working jazz musicians with children, those contemplating parenthood, and jazz industry figures who work with and hire musicians who are parents. The insight of the musicians interviewed for this series provides valuable emotional, philosophical and logistical information and support that is easily accessible to all. “Mothers In Jazz” shines a light on the very specific role of being both a mother and a performing jazz musician.

Andrea Motis is a trumpeter and vocalist from Spain. A graduate of Joan Chamorro’s brilliant youth jazz band “Sant Andreu Jazz Band”, she recorded her first album at the age of fourteen. Andrea made her major label debut on Impulse! In , followed by a recording for Verve in , which made her the first Spanish artist to release on both labels. She has collaborated with musicians including Quincy Jones, the WDR Big Band and Yo-Yo Ma. Andrea lives in Barcelona with her partner, violinist/guitarist Christoph Mallinger and their two year-old son.

Bio

Andrea Motis, born in , is a Spanish singer and trumpeter that conquered the international critics’ praise thanks to his splendid voice often compared to Norah Jones’, and thanks to the grace demonstrated while performing since her youth.

Andrea was musically trained in the trumpet and the saxophone and shortly before tuning thirteen she joined the Sant Andreu Band in which she sang and played the trumpet under the supervision of her mentor, saxophonist Joan Chamorro.

It was with Chamorro that Motis made her discographic debut, indeed in was released Joan Chamorro Presenta Andrea Motis. Two years later she released a new collaboration with her mentor, Feeling Good followed by an invitation to perform at the Festival Jazz of her city of origin, Barcellona, where she shared the stage with Quincy Jones.

In Andrea presented together with the important label Impulse! Records her first solo album, Emotional Dance. For her solo debut with the label, the artist sang in English, Spanish, and Portuguese on tracks masterfully arranged that moved between swing, jazz, and Bossanova.

Febrero is a joyful declaration of happiness and love. It celebrates the hot Chilean summer in the month of February, when this album was recorded. The repertoire was selected by the Spanish singer and trumpeter Andrea Motis together with guitarist and arranger Federico Dannemann. The young and dedicated classical Chilean musicians of Camerata Papageno recorded the repertoire alongside Andrea, featuring Christoph Mallinger on violin and mandolin, and Federico Dannemann on guitar.
