Esther Jane Williams (August 8, - June 6, ) was a United States competitive swimmer and s and s movie star. Known as "America's Mermaid," she was famous for her musical films that featured elaborate performances with swimming, diving and "water ballet," which is now known as synchronized swimming.
A teenager when she did her first film, she was a three-time national swim champion who qualified for three events in the Olympics that would end up being canceled because of World War II.

Esther Williams was a beloved actress and competitive swimmer, setting regional and national records as a teenager. Born Esther Jane Williams on August 8, , in Inglewood, California, she was the fifth and youngest child of Louis and Bula Williams. Her father worked as a sign painter and her mother was a teacher. Williams was born in the couple’s living room.
