Chairil Anwar dilahirkan di Medan, Sumatera Utara pada tanggal 26 Juli Ayah Chairil Anwar bernama Toeloes dan ibunya bernama Saleha.
Keluarga Chairil Anwar cukup berada. Ayahnya merupakan seorang bupati Inderagiri, Riau. Ia bahkan memiliki tali kekeluargaan dengan Sutan Syahrir.

Chairil Anwar lahir di Medan, Sumatera Utara pada 26 Juli Ia merupakan anak tunggal dari pasangan Toeloes dan Saleha, keduanya berasal dari kabupaten Lima Puluh Kota, Sumatera Barat. Jabatan terakhir sang ayah yaitu bupati Inderagiri, Riau. Chairil Anwar masih memiliki ikatan keluarga dengan Soetan Sjahrir yang merupakan Perdana Menteri pertama Indonesia.
