Klansman who orchestrated Mississippi Burning killings dies in prison
Edgar Ray Killen — the Klansman who orchestrated one of the nation’s most notorious mass killings, the slayings of three civil rights workers in Mississippi in — has died.
In , a jury convicted Killen on three counts of manslaughter in the June 21, , deaths of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner and sentenced him to 60 years in prison.
Goodman’s brother, David, said Friday that he had been informed by Mississippi corrections officials that Killen had died at 9 p.m. Thursday.

“Any time a person passes, their family grieves," he said. "However, in the case of Edgar Ray Killen, he belongs to a bigger part of American history, where white supremacists took black lives with impunity."
Chaney, 21, was a Mississippi native who became involved in the civil rights movement. Schwerner, 24, was from New York City and had come with his wife, Rita, to join the movement in Mississippi.

With every eye fixed on her, Rita Schwerner Bender kept her composure, leaning forward in the witness chair and taking the Mississippi courtroom back to a time when black people, and any who sympathized with them, lived under a terror threat.
She told of moving with her husband, Michael Schwerner, to operate a "freedom school" for blacks in the fiercely segregated Mississippi of Back then, she had described whispered threats on the home phone, including the voice that said, "The Jew-boy is dead."
But on this day the courtroom was so quiet you could hear spectators breathe when she recounted the moment she knew they were gone forever — when their blue station wagon was found, burned and abandoned.
"I think it hit me for the first time that they were dead, that there was really no realistic possibility that they were alive," she said.
Bender broke her customary silence about the murders in the hope her testimony could help convict an year-old Ku Klux Klansman in their deaths.

During the Mississippi Freedom Summer of over a thousand white college students from the North traveled South to challenge racial segregation and the dis-enfranchisement of black voters. On June 21, , at the start of the Freedom Summer, a young black Mississippian, James Chaney, and two whites from the North, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman, drove to Philadelphia, Mississippi, to look into the bombing of a black church. They never returned, and pleas to the Justice Department to take immediate action were met with coldness. Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner had been arrested by local police, then released. In a plan participated in by the sheriff and deputy sheriff of the county, they were then followed by a group of white men who blockaded their car, took them to a deserted farm, beat them with chains, shot them to death, and buried their bodies. Not until forty-four days after their arrest were the bodies of the three young men found. Schwerner's wife, Rita, made this statement1 before the discovery of the three bodies.
