“Nirvana Shatakam” : A Gateway to the Infinite

The inspiring affirmation contained in Adi Shankara&#;s Nirvana Shatakam

The profound Nirvana Shatakam stotra (hymn of praise) was composed by Adi Shankaracharya, the great 8th-century philosopher and sage, who stands as one of the most profound spiritual figures in India’s history. His teachings revitalized the understanding of Advaita Vedanta, the philosophy of nonduality, which proclaims the oneness of the individual soul (jivatman) and the Supreme (paramatman).

Shankara’s life was devoted to dispelling ignorance and reaffirming the timeless truth that beyond all worldly distinctions, the essence of existence is pure, unchanging Consciousness—Brahman.

As a young seeker, he journeyed across India, engaging in deep philosophical debates, composing commentaries on the scriptures, and establishing monastic centers (mathas) that continue to preserve his teachings. Integral Yoga sannyasis (swamis) are part of the monastic order and spiritual tradition (parampara) established by Adi Shankaracharya. Among his many devotional hymns and philosophical compositions, Nirvana Shatakam shines as a jewel of self-inquiry an

This is a beautiful poem written by Adi Shankaracharya, in which the state of Jnana, the Paramartika Satya is beautifully explained. Adi Shankaracharya explains how one should investigate into the true nature of Atman/Brahman by rejecting the Anatma&#;s (Non-Self) that are mere superimposition on Atman.

Nirvana Shatkam: The Sloka of Self-Realization

Nirvana Shatkam or Atma Shatkam as it is popularly known, is a śloka in six stanzas written by the great Ādi Śaṅkaracharya summarizing the basic teachings of Advaita Vedanta, or the Hindu teachings of non-dualism.

As a young boy of eight Adi Sankara, while wandering in the Himalayas, seeking to find his Guru, encountered a sage who asked him, &#;Who are you?&#;  The boy answered with these stanzas, which are known as &#;Nirvana Shatakam&#; or Atma Shatakam&#;.  The sage the boy was talking to was Swami Govindpada Acharya, who was indeed, the teacher he was looking for.

&#;Nirvana&#; is complete equanimity, peace, tranquility, freedom and joy. &#;Atma&#; is the True Self.  These few verses can be of tremendous value to progress in contemplation practices that lead to Self-Realization.

The speaker of the poem is nominally Śiva, but it is generally seen as a statement by a knowing person of identity with Śiva or Brahmān. The speaker lists in the earlier verses what he (or Brahmān) is not. He is not body or mind, nor the things that attach them to each other and to the world, including the intellect, the senses, the practices of
