Biography of Edward Frederic Benson

Edward Frederic Benson was born on July 24, , in Berkshire, where his father held the position of headmaster at Wellington College. He was the fifth child in the family of Mary Sidgwick Benson and Edward White Benson. His father, a notable figure, served as the head of the university after Wellington College and later became the Canon of Lincoln Cathedral, the Bishop of Truro in Cornwall during the construction of the cathedral, and finally the Archbishop of Canterbury from to

Frederic, or Fred as he was called in the family, studied at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, Surrey, where he showed a special aptitude for music and the English language. However, this did not prevent him from ending up as one of the worst students, perhaps due to his love for entertaining friends and playing pranks. He then attended Marlborough College in Wiltshire, where he spent six years and devoted much of his time to sports.

Edward Frederic Benson, or Fred as his family knew him, was born at Wellington College, Berkshire on 24th July   Fred’s father Edward White Benson was the first Headmaster of Wellington College; he later went on to become Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral, then the first Bishop of Truro and from until his death in was Archbishop of Canterbury.  

Fred was educated at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, Surrey between and and then went on to Marlborough College.  In Fred and his close friend at Marlborough Eustace Miles both gained scholarships to King’s College, Cambridge. Fred graduated with an honours degree in archaeology.

On leaving Cambridge he led a small excavation at Chester at the city’s Roman walls, in search of Roman legionary tombstones.  Between and he worked as an archaeologist on excavations at Luxor and Alexandria in Egypt and at Athens in Greece.  In Fred’s father, Archbishop Benson died and the Benson family moved from Lambeth Palace, first to Winchester and then in to Tremans, a house near Horsted Keynes in Sussex.
