Born around in the Dauphiné, Diane de Poitiers is the daughter of a Provençal nobleman close to royal power. At the age of 15, she married a certain Louis de Brézé. Grand seneschal of Normandy and grandson of Charles VII and his mistress Agnès Sorel, he is 40 years her senior.
Having been made lady-in-waiting by Queen Claude and then by Louise of Savoy, mother of Francis I, Diane became closer to the royal children, especially the younger Henri, who became her lover when he was still a very young teenager.

Avant que Diane de Poitiersn’entreprenne de faire édifier le château actuel, Anet possédait déjà deux châteaux.
Le premier, bâti au XIIe siècle, était une forteresse féodale avec d'épaisses murailles, quatre tours et un gros donjon rond.
Philippe Auguste y fit plusieurs séjours et partit de là assaillir la Normandie dont la rivière d'Eure formait à cet endroit la frontière. Cette forteresse fut démantelée en , par ordre du roi Charles V, à la suite de la révolte de Charles le Mauvais, roi de Navarre, comte d'Évreux et seigneur d'Anet.
Au XVII° siècle, le château appartint aux Ducs de Vendôme qui y apportèrent de profonds remaniements : l'escalier d'honneur fut construit par Claude Desgots en ainsi que le Pavillon du Gouvernement.
Au XVIII° siècle, la Duchesse du Maine, puis le Duc de Penthièvre y menèrent grand train.
