* Mai Jägerndorf
† Juli Berlin
Wirken

Interest in Gerhard Taschner has grown in recent years. Born in Jagerndorf in his early training was fascinating early studies with his grandfather were followed by two years with Hubay in Budapest (from ) and then time in Vienna with Huberman. Hed already given his debut in Prague in as a wunderkind seven year old playing a Mozart Concerto. In at the ripe old age of ten he gave a full-scale standard prodigy trio of Concertos assisted by a doubtless wary Felix Weingartner and the Vienna Symphony. Unusually peripatetic he went briefly to America to chance his arm but returned to Germany and thence to Brno where he took a position at the second desk in the Theatre Orchestra. Here, aged seventeen, he was heard by Herman Abendroth who was duly impressed and later on by Furtwängler who encouraged him to stay in Berlin. During the War it was Taschner who along with Siegfried Borries (the Philharmonics previous leader) and Erich Rohn provided the leader-soloists to promote the concerto literature supporting such acknowledged stars as Georg Kulenkampff. Taschner had some significant successes during these years, not least in the dedication of Fortners Concerto but i

Here's a violinist, GERHARD TASCHNER, Czech-born, but spent a lot of time in Germany, and outside of his own time parameters of active performing, is nearly forgotten. He never had an exclusive recording contract with any label. According to Wikipedia, he was difficult, hugely opinionated, arguing with people such as von Karajan and others of that stature, but still had a career, concluding it by teaching and adjudicating. Nonetheless, the interest in the violinist has been stronger over the last few years. While having no exclusive record company, his list of recordings from live concerts and radio recordings, and his collaborators, is impressive. Pianists he performed with include Walter Gieseking, Edith Farnadi, Hubert Giesen, Michael Raucheisen, Martin Krause, and Taschner's wife, Gerda Nette, just to mention a few. When it comes to conductors, we find Fritz Lehmann, Rudolf Kempe, Hermann Abendroth, Arthur Rother, Georg Ludwig Jochum, Gustav König, Wilhelm Furtwängler and others. Cellist Ludwig Hoelscher also performed with Taschner and Gieseking.
No recording contract but lots of live- and radio recordings, which do
The last few years has seen an explosion of interest in Gerhard Taschner. A biography, re-issues of his Odeon 78s of the early s and a number of broadcast performances including major concerti and work with august collaborators, such as Gieseking, has furthered our knowledge of his musicianship. His career was truncated and he died regrettably young at fifty-four, though his active concert-giving career had trailed off significantly before his death in
He made his first recordings for Odeon as a young man of nineteen in war-torn Berlin. Of the eighteen discs that he made ten are presented in this husband and wife disc devoted pretty equally to Gerhard and his wife Gerda, herself a talented pianist. Two of the Odeons include the only sides recorded by Gerhard and Gerda as a duo. His Chaconne, a massive and etiolated performance, is the work of a serious-minded young man whose devotion to Bach is not matched as yet by a sense of architectural responsibility. Ive previously reviewed a slightly later, radio broadcast of Taschners Chaconne and I thought that was slow, but this November performance stretches to a brain curdling fifteen and a half minutes. His articulation is abr
