The Story of Barack Obama
Even though I witnessed his inauguration through the television screen when I was in the eighth grade, -and consequently grew up under his presidency for eight years afterward- I still don't know too much about our 44th president. I'm glad I was able to further get to know him through Dr. Tonya Leslie's research. She pens a great nonfiction book that reads like a novel. As an upper elementary educator, I would feel the reading level and contents are appropiate for all learners, but 3rd-6th graders would especially thrive with the verbiage, illustrations, pacing/formatting, and text features.
The book contains many high-frequency words and common civics terms. Thankfully, potential unknown vocabulary is bolded and defined with the glossary in the end of the book. Each spread has beautiful illustrations by Loris Lora. She crafts vivid pictures that help further enhance the narrative and give visuals for the reader. The pacing is fast, but thorough for covering an entire man's life in less than 70 pages. There was quite a bit of background
