From Chillicothe, Ohio. Little is known about her childhood, except that she attended high school in Columbus, Ohio, and was a talented student. Before leaving Ohio, she married William H. Clifford, a lawyer and outspoken Republican member of the Ohio State Legislature. In addition to raising her family, Clifford founded the Minerva Reading Club. During the late nineteenth century, this club offered its members an opportunity for social improvement, leadership skill development, and a forum for increased educational opportunity and awareness of racial issues. Poetry readings, musical performances, and oratory contests were all a part of the literary club practice.
Clifford’s writing skills developed as she presented poetry and short stories to her group. This led to her involvement with the National Association of Colored Women (NACW). Then, living in Cleveland, her work and extensive abilities benefited the organization, and in , she founded the Ohio Federation of Colored Women’s Clubs (OFCWC), the first organization of

Clifford was mostly known for being a poet, writer, clubwomen, and a women’s and civil rights activist. Clifford’s strong drive to make a change during the nineteenth and early twentieth century was heavily portrayed through her physical actions as well as her writings.
Clifford was a very educated women, who graduated from high school with an honors status. When her high school years came to an end, she began to gain a passion for creative writing and theater. Clifford was born and raised in Ohio, thus as she began to devote her time and efforts in writing and theater, she also began to have a desire to teach. Unfortunately, Clifford could not live out that dream due to limitations that were placed upon African American women during the nineteenth and early twentieth century(Murphy, ). In she had the opportunity to move to Parkersburg, West Virginia to become a teacher and later after, in Clifford married William H. Clifford. Biography
Personal life
Born in Chillicothe, Ohio and raised and educated in the state, Clifford left the state to teach in Parkersburg, West Virginia, for three years. In , she returned to Cleveland, Ohio, married Ohio state legislator William H. Clifford, and became an engaged clubwoman. In , she moved with her husband and two children, Maurice and Joshua, to Washington, D.C. Clifford died on November 10, , and was buried at Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.
