Juan de la Cierva
Juan de la Cierva,(born September 21, , Murcia, Spain—died December 19, , London, England), Spanish aeronautical engineer who invented the autogiro, an aircraft in which lift is provided by a freely rotating rotor and which served as the forerunner of the helicopter.
Although trained as a civil engineer, Cierva became interested in aviation early in his youth. Between and he designed and built gliders and airplanes. The crash of his trimotor plane in led him to develop the autogiro as a more stable form of aircraft. In at Getafe, Spain, he made his first successful flight in an autogiro, and in he went to England to continue his work. Cierva-type autogiros were used widely in France, Germany, Japan, and the United States prior to World War II, when they were supplanted by was killed in an airliner crash at the Croydon aerodrome, near London.
Juan de la Cierva y Codorníu, 1st Count of la Cierva ( –) was born to a wealthy, aristocratic Spanish family, and for a time his father was the war minister. At the age of eight he was spending his pocket money with his friends on experiments with gliders in one of his fathers work sheds. In their teens they constructed an aeroplane from the wreckage they had bought from a French aviator who had crashed the plane. The final aeroplane used wood from a Spanish bar counter for the propeller.
At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, De la Cierva supported the Nationalist coalition forces, helping to get General Franco from the Canary Islands to Spanish Morocco. His brother was summarily executed by the Republican army.
De la Cierva started building the aircraft in In he designed and built a tri-motor aeroplane. In he started to consider the use of a rotor to generate lift at low airspeed, and eliminate the risk of stall.
De la Cierva experienced several failures primarily associated with the unbalanced rolling movement generated when attempting take-off, due to dissymmetry of lift between the advancing and retreating blades. This major difficulty was resolved by the introduct

Early Life and Interest in Aviation
Juan de la Cierva, the Spanish engineer and aviation pioneer, was born into a wealthy family in Murcia, Spain. He developed a passion for aviation at a young age, and by , his interest had become serious.
Development of the Autogyro
Cierva recognized the potential of using a rotating wing to generate lift at low speeds, preventing an aircraft from stalling. In , he began experimenting with this concept, known as autorotation. He soon discovered that the main challenges lay in balancing the craft and ensuring equal lift on both advancing and retreating blades.
In , after numerous failed attempts, Cierva achieved a breakthrough by inventing the rotor hub, which allowed for proper lift distribution. This led to the creation of the first successful autogyro, a heavier-than-air craft that relied on a rotating wing for lift.

Spanish Aeronautical Engineer
Juan de la Cierva Codorniu was born in Murcia, Spain, in Today he is remembered as the inventor of the autogiro , a forerunner of the helicopter. For six years he attended the Escuela Especial de Ingenieros de
Caminos, Canales y Puertos in Madrid, Spain, where he studied theoretical aerodynamics . Following this, he entered a competition to design military aircraft for the government and built a biplane bomber with an airfoil (the part of a plane that provides lift) that he designed mathematically. The plane was tested in May , but it crashed when the pilot stalled it.
Cierva believed that fixed-wing aircraft were unsafe, so he experimented with a rotary-wing design , and the world's first working autogiro* flew yards on January 19, Two days later the autogiro was unveiled to the public and made three flights, the longest of which was two and a half miles. In , he founded the Cierva Autogiro Company in England and later collaborated with the Autogiro Company of America. On September 18, , he flew one of his autogiros across the English Channel, and in , he flew one from England to Spain. Autogiros w
