Lorraine Hansberry Biography
Lorraine Hansberry was born at Provident Hospital on the South Side of Chicago on May 19, She was the youngest of Nannie Perry Hansberry and Carl Augustus Hansberry’s four children. Her father founded Lake Street Bank, one of the first banks for blacks in Chicago, and ran a successful real estate business. Her uncle was William Leo Hansberry, a scholar of African studies at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
Many prominent African American social and political leaders visited the Hansberry household during Lorraine’s childhood including sociology professor W.E.B. DuBois, poet Langston Hughes, actor and political activist Paul Robeson, musician Duke Ellington and Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens.
Despite their middle-class status, the Hansberrys were subject to segregation. When she was 8 years old, Hansberry’s family deliberately attempted to move into a restricted neighborhood. Lorraine Hansberry, African-American playwright, was born into a relatively wealthy-middle class family in Chicago in and was raised with the belief in fighting for injustice. She studied at the University of Wisconsin for two years and moved to New York in to study and then write. She married in and separated in after privately coming out as a lesbian. Her short life is marked by the impact her writing had in the world of drama and also for the commitment she had in the fight for equality. This entailed challenging racism, sexism and homophobia.
In , she became the first African-American woman to have a play shown on Broadway. This was the seminal A Raisin in the Sun (), which was also awarded the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play of the Year (and she is the first African American to receive this). Her other dramatic works include The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window (), To Be Young, Gifted and Black () and Les Blancs ().

The granddaughter of a freed enslaved person, and the youngest by seven years of four children, Lorraine Vivian Hansberry 3rd was born on May 19, , in Chicago, Illinois. Hansberry’s father was a successful real estate broker, and her mother was a schoolteacher. Her parents contributed large sums of money to the NAACP and the Urban League. In , Hansberry's family moved to a white neighborhood and was violently attacked by neighbors. They refused to move until a court ordered them to do so, and the case made it to the Supreme Court as Hansberry v. Lee, ruling restrictive covenants illegal.
