Victor Segalen
Victor Segalen (14 January – 21 May ) was a French naval doctor, ethnographer, archeologist, writer, poet, explorer, art-theorist, linguist and literary critic. He was born in Brest. He studied medicine and graduated at the Navy School of medicine ('Santé Navale') in Bordeaux. He traveled and lived in Polynesia (–) and China (– and ). He died by accident in a forest in Huelgoat, Northern Brittany, France ("under mysterious circumstances") and reputedly with an open copy of Hamlet by his side. In , the French state inscribed his name on the walls of the Panthéon because of his sacrifice for his country during World War I. He gave his name to the Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 University of medicine, literature and social sciences in Bordeaux under the Academy of Bordeaux, and to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of Brest where he was born, and the French International School of Hong Kong. The Foundation has recently funded the translation of Segalen's posthumous book EQUIPEE, which will be published in English in by Atlas Press of London. It is the last major work of Segalen which had not been translated into English, and includes poetic descriptions of China.
Victor Segalen () was a French author, archaeologist, ethnographer, poet and literary critic, whose importance for introducing Chinese literature and culture to the West cannot be over-estimated. Although he is insufficiently known outside of his native country of France, his work has been progressively translated into English, and he has slowly been achieving the recognition which is his due in the English-speaking world. His novel RENÉ LEYS (which is the name of the main character) was published posthumously in It is set in Beijing towards the end of the Qing Dynasty, and the story is astounding for its dramatic originality and sense of excitement. Biography
French naval doctor Victor Segalen was born in Brest, Brittany. He traveled to Tahiti, where he held a medical post (–), and to China several times as a member of several archaeological expeditions. He is the author of a collection of prose poems, Stèles (); the novels Les Immémoriaux and René Leys (); and Equipée (), an account of an imaginary expedition.
His books often portray the effects of colonization and European culture on colonized populations. His theories of the exotic are pursued in Essay on Exoticism: An Aesthetics of Diversity (, trans. Yaël Rachel Schlick). Stèles—available in a English translation by Timothy Billings and Christopher Bush—is a collection of poems that imitate the inscriptions of stelae that he observed on his travels in China.
In Segalen was found dead in a forest in near Brest, with a copy of Shakespeare’s works open to Hamlet at his side.
