Cotton manufacturer, president of a wood-working company, businessman, inventor, composer, and songbook editor? Though it may seem hard to believe, these terms all describe one man: William Howard Doane. Many of the writers that we have looked at have their stories beginning in England, but this man's story takes place in the United States of America.

In Preston, Connecticut, , William H. Doane was born to Joseph and Frances Doane. William Doane, one of nine children, was quite a musically gifted child. By the time he was fifteen, he was proficient at the flute, double bass viol, and cabinet organ and had begun composing his own music.

It was at this time in that Doane also began working for his father at Doane & Treat, a cotton manufacturer. After three years, he moved on to a higher position in J.A. Fay & Co (where he would eventually become president), which manufactured machinery for woodworking. In , he married Frances Treat, whose father had partnered with his own in Doane & Treat.

Though a busy man, Doane still found time to compose musi

Music Man

While Doane’s riches came from manufacturing, his true passion was music. In Sunnyside, Doane had a music room filled with manuscripts from famous composers and instruments he could play, many of them exotic sights from overseas, which are now a part of the Cincinnati Museum of Art’s collection. But Doane’s real musical passion was composing hymns. Doane composed thousands of hymns, and at least 1, were with the blind hymn writer Miss Fanny Crosby, which were sung around the globe. None of the money Doane made from his music was kept – it all went back to the church or other charitable endeavors. Doane wrote a multitude of hits such as Tell Me the Old, Old StoryStand Up for Jesus; Closer, Dear Lord to Thee; and Safe in the Arms of Jesus which Doane composed on a train ride to Cincinnati and Miss Crosby wrote the words for in thirty minutes after hearing the music for the first time. Doane’s music was sung at missions across Asia, in churches throughout America, and on battlefields across the globe. It is said that in t
