One of the nation's biggest, most challenging and stacked state wrestling tournaments starts this week, as the PIAA Pennsylvania High School State Wrestling Championships kick off on March 6 in Hershey, Penn.

Two divisions of boy's and one division of girl's wrestlers will begin their battles on Thursday at the Giant Center, with over 40 nationally ranked wrestlers appearing at the tournament this year.

Among the superstar talents at this year's PIAA Tournament are three of the nation's Top 20 pound-for-pound wrestlers, Jax Forrest (No. 2), Bo Bassett (No. 4) and Melvin Miller (No. 14).

The nation's No. 3-ranked lb wrestler, Aaron Seidel, will also be at the tournament, looking to secure his fourth straight PIAA title, but he'll have his hands full as he's in the same bracket as Forrest. Seidel recently made Pennsylvania history, claiming his th career win in the PIAA AA regionals, becoming the first PIAA wrestler to win matches.

Bucks County no longer just basketball as high school wrestling soaring to new heights


When asked what Bucks County area wrestlers have been doing, and what they need to do, in order to compete at the state's highest level, veteran Central Bucks East head coach Dave Scarpill let out a laugh.

"There are a lot of things that go into it, but dedication to the sport is probably the biggest thing," Scarpill said.

"All I know is that Chase Williams was over at the River Club at Germantown Academy the day after he won a state title and had a three-hour practice.

"And the Bachmann brothers (from Faith Christian) were there, too. They were all working out already. All those Bucks County state champs are at these clubs that are popping up all over."

Greatest day in Bucks County high school wrestling history

Less than 24 hours earlier, Williams, a CB East freshman, and Freddy and Joey Bachmann, among many other area wrestlers, all won PIAA gold medals at the state tournament in Hershey. 

That day was Saturday, March 8, which will go down as the greatest day in Bucks County high school wrestling history.

The seven Division 1 State champions: Gary Hauswirth, Dana Rasmussen (twice), John Carroll, Steve Looney, Steve O’Keefe and Mike Keon. Dana Rasmussen, who was a two-time New England finalist, became a NE champion as a senior and went on to wrestle at UMass Amherst. David Donovan, after losing in the state finals, became a New England champion a week later, avenging his earlier loss in the state finals.

National High School Girls Wrestling Team Rankings

The committee that selects the National Girls High School Rankings, which includes representation from USA Wrestling, FloWrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum, has published its February National Girls High School Team Rankings.

This ranking includes public and private schools at the high school level from all states, including states with official girls state championship events as well as those with unofficial girls state championships.

For the January rankings, the committee has once again selected the top 50 high school teams in the nation and has expanded the number of honorable mention teams from 40 to 50 programs.

Remaining as the #1 ranked team is the nation is Wyoming Seminary (Pa.), the Prep School national champions. Individual athletes from Wyoming Seminary have competed well in college opens and high school events.
