Marjorie Elizabeth Cameron

Born: 23 April in Belle Plaine, Iowa.

Died: 24 June in Los Angeles, California.

Marjorie Cameron Parsons Kimmel, who professionally used the mononym Cameron (also known as Candida or Candy), was an American artist, poet, actress, and occultist. A follower of Thelema, the new religious movement established by the English occultist Aleister Crowley, she was also the wife of rocket pioneer and fellow Thelemite Jack Parsons.

Born in Belle Plaine, Iowa, Cameron volunteered for services in the United States' Navy during the Second World War, after which she settled in Pasadena, California, where she met Parsons, who believed her to be the "Elemental woman" that he had invoked in the early stages of a series of sex magic rituals called the Babalon Working. They entered a relationship and were married in Their relationship was often strained, although Parsons sparked her involvement in Thelema and occultism. After Parsons' death in an explosion at their home in , Cameron came to suspect that her hu

Edward James: A Very English Surrealist

Edward James was born in into a wealthy Sussex family, and inherited a fortune at a young age. He went on to become the greatest English patron of art of the early 20th Century – supporting, at one time or another, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst and a host of more minor artists, and publishing John Betjeman's first works of poetry while they were still at Oxford.

After a short-lived marriage to – and painful divorce from – dancer Tilly Losch, he wandered through America, moving from the artists’ commune in Taos, New Mexico, to Los Angeles where he continued to seek 'outsider art' to support - the Watts Towers being one example.

After the war he travelled to the Mexican jungle where he eventually bought a large area of rainforest and built a surrealist garden called Las Pozas, with ever more bizarre monumental structures in concrete. This garden is now slowly being restored and is becoming something of a tourist curiosity despite its remote location.

It is difficult to think of someone who better embodied the term English eccentric. He was concerned, for example, that he would find himself unable to secure a ready supply of Kle

Seclusia: A Surrealist Exploration of Edward James&#;s Life

Bernabé Alatorre Rios&#;s novel Seclusia, published by Sulfur Editions and described as the world&#;s first fictional recreation of Edward James&#;s life, offers a captivating and insightful portrait of the man behind the surrealist masterpiece, Las Pozas in Xilitla, Mexico. Through a blend of biographical facts and fictional narratives, the novel explores the complex interplay of James&#;s personality, his artistic patronage, and the magical world he created in the heart of the Mexican jungle.

A Troubled Childhood and Artistic Awakening

One of the most striking aspects of Seclusia is its exploration of James&#;s childhood and the early influences that shaped his artistic sensibilities. From a young age, James exhibited an eccentric nature, often clashing with his strict upbringing and finding solace in his fantastical imagination.

His childhood home, West Dean Mansion, played a crucial role in fostering his connection with nature and art. While the sprawling estate provided a backdrop for lavish hunts and social gatherings, James found refuge in the gardens, observing the intricate lives of bees, birds, and b

Remembering Edward James . . . eccentric English Poet, artist, and patron of the Surrealist movement

Deep in a tropical rainforest about seven hours&#; drive north of Mexico City, in a region seldom visited by tourists, lies Las Pozas (The Pools), the larger-than-life fantastical, surrealistic home and gardens developed over a period of some 35 years by eccentric English poet, artist, and patron of the Surrealist movement, EDWARD JAMES.

Edward James, born in England in &#;the same year as the well-known artist Frida Kahlo and the not-so-well known but marvelously talented Annette Nancarrow (see sidebar about my book in progress)&#;grew up the only son among five children and inherited considerable wealth upon his father&#;s death. He attended fine private schools, including Chr
