He didn't get to go to school very much, but he learned to read and write Spanish during his travels. He also taught himself Latin because all the geography books were written in Latin.
Some people thought he was trying to prove the world was round, but this is not true. Most people already knew the earth was round. He wanted to find a short way to get to the Indies by ship.
He was a Christian and wanted to tell the story of Christ to the people he would find in the far-away lands. He also wanted wealth for himself and for Spain, and he wanted to be famous.
He tried for eight years to get King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to supply him with ships and money. Finally they agreed, but he made moredemands.
He wanted to be made a knight,admiralof the Ocean Sea. He wanted to be the viceroyand governorgeneralof all lands he would discover. Also he wanted one-tenth of everything he found of value in the new lands.

Christopher Columbus is the famous explorer credited with finding the New World. While some will point to Leif Ericson as the first, his discovery was not made public and, therefore, did not have any impact.
Despite finding the New World, he never knew it was a new continent and thought he found a new way to India.
Columbus sailed to the Caribbean on four separate voyages and helped forge what would become the Spanish Empire.
Unfortunately, he is known for his brutality against the natives, although there is not any primary source documentation. These accusations came from rivals who wanted to take his place, which is something Christopher Columbus dealt with his entire life.
His discovery would begin the Age of Exploration into the New World. The Portuguese had already established their empire, but Spain would quickly become dominant. Soon Hernan Cortes and Francisco Pizarro would conquer two empires and other Spanish Conquistadors would begin to push into the new continent and make new discoveries.

EARLY LIFE IN GENOA AND PORTUGAL
Christopher Columbus was born in the republic of Genoa. His father, Domenico Colombo, was a wool weaver, wool merchant, tavern keeper, and political appointee. Columbus's early education was limited, although he read widely after reaching adulthood. He went to sea at an early age and sailed the Mediterranean on merchant vessels, traveling as far east as the island of Chios. In the mids, he settled in Portugal, joining other Italian merchants in Lisbon. Columbus sailed north to England and Ireland, and possibly as far as Iceland. He also visited the Madeira and Canary Islands and the African coast as far south as the Portuguese trading post at São Jorge da Mina (in modern Ghana).
In or , Columbus married Felipa Moniz, member of a prominent Italian-Portuguese family. Her father and brother were hereditary captains of the island of Porto Santo, and her mother came from a noble family.
