Iula Olivia Wright Carter
Iula Olivia Wright Carter lived a life of faith and determination as a wife, mother, encourager, educator, trailblazer, author, and most importantly as a servant of the living God.
At an early age she accepted Jesus as her savior. Her trust in God enabled her to overcome childhood health challenges that included a life-threatening heart condition and asthma. As a young adult, despite her doctors’ opinions and advice that her heart condition and asthma were insurmountable obstacles to childbearing, she trusted God and she was able to bear six children. She was determined to do God’s will despite numerous operations. She raised her family as she nurtured creativity and perseverance in her children and everyone she met. Moreover, and most importantly she lived as a Christian witness who encouraged and guided people to Jesus Christ.
Iula had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. She sought an education for herself, her family, and for her people. She attended classes at Sinclair Business College, Cedarville Bible College, and Wright State University. She attended college graduations of all her children and grandchildren. She wor
Martin Carter Biography
Poet
One of the most important poets to come out of the Caribbean, Martin Carter has been compared to literary lions such as W.B. Yeats and Pablo Neruda. His most famous work was fueled by the political turmoil that gripped his native Guyana in the s and s. He told fellow Guyanese writer Bill Carr in an interview for the Guyanese magazine Release that politics and poetry were inseparable. "[If] politics is a part of life, we shall become involved in politics, if death is a part of life we shall become involved with death, like the butterfly who is not afraid to be ephemeral." Unfortunately, because of the fame of his politically-charged poems Carter was often pigeon-holed as a revolutionary poet. But as Guyana's Stabroek News wrote, "there were other voices in Martin Carter, strains of tenderness, love poems of moving fervour, agonies expressed that have nothing to do with politics, insights into all of human nature."
During his life, Carter received limited recognition outside of Guyana, mainly because he refused to abandon his country. A friend of his told the Guyana Chronicle, "Exile for him was not going overseas like so many of the Car
The Kind Eagle by Martin Carter
On (not) Finding Martin Carter’s The Kind Eagle () by Faizal Deen Since the passing of Martin Carter in —born on 7 June in Georgetown, Guyana—a cluster of publications has solidified his reputation as the Caribbean’s finest poet of ‘democratic humanism’. I am thinking here of Edward Said’s concept of a “humanistic heroism” of “minds whose actions become part of the collective human history” (68) around them. See Said’s posthumous, Humanism and Democratic Criticism (Columbia UP, ). The ‘love possessed’ for Carter by the region’s most celebrated cultural workers—at the close of the millennium—and evidenced in the remarkable gathering that is All Are Involved: The Art of Martin Carter ()—continues to inspire—a rare kind of *intimate* scholarship. In , Christian Campbell would launch The Martin Carter 70 Project, a digital wake and archive where Campbell reads a poem a day for 70 days, marking the 70 years Carter lived as an earthling, but beginning on the 13 December anniversary of Carter’s death: More than just ‘a go-to-poet’ for pithy revolutionary aphorisms, Carter’s ‘goodness’ becomes the most radical act of love in a 21st century Caribbean—and
