Martin Luther and the Doctrine of Justification by Faith Alone
In his definitive work on the Doctrine of Justification, James Buchanan once rightly and uncompromisingly stated that ‘the revival of the gospel doctrine of justification was the chief means of effecting the Reformation of religion in Europe in the sixteenth century.’
John Calvin, the great theologian of the Reformation and a contemporary of Martin Luther’s refers to the doctrine of Justification in his famous ‘Institutes of the Christian Religion’ as the ‘main hinge on which religion turns.’
Similarly the Puritan, Thomas Watson in his well-known and much blessed work, ‘A Body of Doctrine’ says that
Justification is the very hinge and pillar of Christianity. An error about justification is dangerous, like a defect in a foundation. Justification by Christ is a spring of the water of life. To have the poison of corrupt doctrine cast into this spring is damnable.
He goes on to note that it was a saying of Luther, that after his death the doctrine of justification would be corrupted. ‘In these latter times, the Arminians and Socinians have cast a dead fly into this precious ointment.’ Watson was rightly
Martin Luther (November 10, – February 18, ) was a German monk who became the father of the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther criticised aspects of the Catholic Church and the concept of Papal infallibility. In particular, he believed that it was the Bible alone &#; and not priests or the Church &#; which had legitimacy for interpreting the word of Christ. Martin Luther also translated the Bible into German, making it more accessible to the general public.

Martin Luther was born 10 November , in Eisleben, Saxony (modern day Germany). His father was relatively wealthy and paid for his son to gain an education in Magdeburg and Eisenach.
In , Martin Luther became a student at the University of Erfurt. At the request of his father, he took law, but he soon abandoned law, preferring to study Aristotle and the subjects of philosophy and theology. Despite admiring aspects of Aristotle and the classics, he was unsatisfied with just reason and intellectual studies and decided to become a monk so he could devote his life to God.

Luther began the Protestant Reformation with the publication of his Ninety-Five Theses on October 31, In this publication, he attacked the Church’s sale of indulgences. He advocated a theology that rested on God’s gracious activity in Jesus Christ, rather than in human works. Nearly all Protestants trace their history back to Luther in one way or another. Luther’s relationship to philosophy is complex and should not be judged only by his famous statement that “reason is the devil’s whore.”
Given Luther’s critique of philosophy and his famous phrase that philosophy is the “devil’s whore,” it would be easy to assume that Luther had only contempt for philosophy and reason. Nothing could be further from the truth. Luther believed, rather, that philosophy and reason had important roles to play in our lives and in the life of the community. However, he also felt that it was important to remember what those roles were and not to confuse the proper use of philosophy with an improper one.
