Ogden Goelet, the younger son of the late Robert Goelet and Sarah Ogden, was born in New York City, June 11, , and died on board the yacht, Mayflower, at Cowes, England, August 27,
He gave much attention to the management of the large estates inherited by himself and his brother, and was prominent as a patron of yachting. The most important annual prizes for sloops and for schooners racing in American waters are the Goelet cups, which he gave to the New York Yacht Club in He also gave a number of prizes for races in European waters, one of which was won by the Prince of Wales Britanna. At one time the owner of the fast schooner Yacht Norseman, more recently he built the Mayflower, which, when launched in had few rivals among luxurious steam yachts, and added the novel feature of mounting six rapid fire guns. This craft was acquired by the U.S. Government for $ for the war with Spain, and equipped as a torpedo destroyer. In , Ogden and his brother, Robert, inherited a real estate empire in Manhattan of houses then worth a combined $40 million which was second only to the Astors. Robert was the good-humored business brain between the two, whereas Ogden was more scholarly and retiring in his nature. They were first cousins of Elbridge Thomas Gerry () whose son married the widow of George Washington Vanderbilt II of Biltmore. Ogden's wife, May, was one of "the marrying Wilsons" whose brother married Carrie Astor. Through his wife, Ogden's brothers-in-law were Cornelius Vanderbilt III and Sir Mungo Herbert. Ogden was run down by a car in , leaving a personal fortune that had already doubled to $40 million. He had two children. He built Fifth Avenue and Ochre Court in Newport. He kept a house in Paris and leased Wimborne House in London to introduce his daughter (who became the Duchess of Roxburghe) to European society. He commissioned the Mayflower, a foot yacht worth an estimated $1 million and was listed in as one of the 52 "Patriarchs" of New York City.
