Admired by fellow performers, acclaimed by critics and revered by music-lovers worldwide, Rudolf Buchbinder stands among the great pianists of our time. His interpretations flow from a unique fusion of spiritual insight and intellectual rigour, expressive spontaneity and technical control, refined over the course of a career spanning more than sixty years. The irresistible power of his artistry continues to grow, reinforced by tireless study and a lifelong passion for the masterworks of the piano literature.
Buchbinder is always guided by what the music tells him, never by the demands of fashion or the pursuit of personal glory. The influential critic Joachim Kaiser described him as the “greatest natural pianistic talent”, praising his innate ability to reveal fresh ideas and mine rich seams of expression in the moment of performance. “I aspire to experience the pinnacle of my pianistic career at the end of my life,” notes Buchbinder in his autobiography. “Of course, I do not know when that will be … which is a shame, in a way! Because in my profession you have never actually accomplished something – there is always more to be achieved.”

Rudolf Buchbinder wurde am 1. Dezember im böhmischen Leitmeritz geboren.
Rudolf Buchbinder war mit fünf Jahren der jüngste Student, der jemals an der Wiener Musikhochschule aufgenommen wurde; seinen ersten öffentlichen Auftritt hatte der hochbegabte Bub, der in Wien aufwuchs, bereits mit neun Jahren. Ab studierte er bei Bruno Seidlhofer, der auch Friedrich Gulda ausbildete.
Als Pianist des Wiener Trios errang er den 1. Preis beim Internationalen Musikwettbewerb der ARD in München. Danach widmete er sich zunehmend seiner Laufbahn als Solist.
Rudolf Buchbinder hat mit seinen Beethoven-Interpretationen Maßstäbe gesetzt. Auch seine Einspielung der beiden Brahms-Klavierkonzerte mit dem Königlichen Concertgebouw-Orchester unter Dirigent Nikolaus Harnoncourt fand in der Musikwelt große Beachtung.
Rudolf Buchbinders Repertoire ist sehr umfangreich - z.B. 27 Mozart- und 32 Beethoven-Klaviersonaten - und schließt auch zahlreiche Komponisten des Jahrhunderts ein.

Rudolf Buchbinder is one of the legendary performers of our time. The authority of a career spanning more than 60 years is uniquely combined with esprit and spontaneity in his piano playing. Tradition and innovation, faithfulness and freedom, authenticity and open-mindedness merge in his reading of the great piano literature.
His interpretations of the works of Ludwig van Beethoven in particular are regarded as setting standards. He has performed the 32 piano sonatas in cycles all over the world more than 60 times to date and has continued to develop the history of interpretation of these works over the decades.
With the edition BUCHBINDER:BEETHOVEN, Deutsche Grammophon presents a complete recording of the 32 piano sonatas and the five piano concertos in the run-up to Buchbinder's 75th birthday in December , thus creating a sounding monument to two outstanding Buchbinder-Beethoven cycles of recent times. Buchbinder was the first pianist to play all of Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonatas within one festival summer at the Salzburg Festival. The Salzburg cycle was recorded live for DVD (Unitel) and is now also available on nine CDs.
