Am 1. Oktober kam Lorenz Werthmann als Sohn eines Gutsverwalters in Geisenheim im Rheingau zur Welt. Der Junge ging in Hadamar aufs Gymnasium und schloss mit dem Abitur ab. nahm er am Collegium Germanicum in Rom sein Theologie-Studium auf. Die Begegnungen mit Papst Leo XIII. und Franz Hitze, Kaplan am dortigen Campo Santo Teutonico und späterer Sozialpolitiker, waren wegweisend für sein künftiges soziales Engagement.

Nach seiner Priesterweihe und seiner Promotion in Theologie und Philosophie in Rom ging Werthmann zurück nach Deutschland.
