Kenneth Kaunda was the first president of Zambia. He was born on 28 April at Lubwa Mission in Chinsali. (In what was then Northern Rhodesia.)
He was the youngest of eight children. His father was a Minister and teacher who had left Malawi in and his mother was the first African woman to teach in colonial Zambia. Initially, the young Kaunda followed in his mother’s footsteps, becoming boarding master and then headmaster at Lubwa Mission from to He worked at Salisbury (which is now Harare), at the 'Salisbury Bindura Mines'. In became a teacher in Mufulira, for the United Missions to the Copperbelt. But he soon began to show an active interest in politics. In he returned to Lubwa to become a part-time teacher, but resigned in and became Organising Secretary for Northern Rhodesia of the: 'Northern Rhodesian African National Congress.'

Kenneth David Kaunda, commonly known as Kenneth Kaunda, was a Zambian politician and statesman. He was born on April 28, , in Lubwa Mission, a Scottish Presbyterian Church mission in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). Kaunda belonged to the Tonga ethnic group.

Early Life and Education

Kaunda completed his primary education in Lubwa and his secondary education in Lusaka. From to , he worked as a teacher and a civil servant in Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, and Tanganyika.

Political Career

In , Kaunda became the leader of the African National Congress of Northern Rhodesia in the Northern Province. He later led the formation of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) in , after the ANC was banned by the government. Kaunda was arrested following the ban but was released and elected as the president of UNIP.

Birth and early life

Born Kenneth David Kaunda on April 28, , in Chinsali, Northern Rhodesia (modern-day Zambia), this future president of Zambia grew up with seven siblings.

Kenneth Kaunda’s parents were Reverend David Kaunda and Helen Kaunda. Both his parents were educated and respected people in the Bemba community in northern Zambia. For example, his mother was the first African woman to hold a teaching position in colonial Zambia. His father, who was born in Nyasaland (now Malawi), was an ordained Church of Scotland missionary and a school headmaster.

Between and , the young Kaunda studied at the Munali Training Center, a teacher training school situated in Lusaka. Upon graduating, he took up a teaching position at Upper Primary School in Lubwa. In less than a year, he had risen to become the headmaster of the school.

In the mids, he was worked as a teacher in Tanganyika (now Tanzania). In , he went on to establish a farmers’ cooperative in Mufulira, a copper mining area. Around this time, he also served as the head teacher at Mufulira Upper School.
